My Old Lady

Kevin Kline is Mathias, a broke New York drunk who inherits an apartment in Paris from his estranged father in this comedy-drama. He goes to France to liquidate the asset, but finds a refined old woman (Maggie Smith) living there with her protective daughter (Kristen Scott Thomas). Mathias learns that the apartment is a 'viager' – an ancient French real estate agreement – and that he will not get actual possession of the apartment until the old lady dies.

Shame, but then, when your lead actors are Kevin Kline, Maggie Smith and Kristin Scott Thomas, why worry?

It only becomes truly compelling in its second half, as Horovitz drives toward darker material and farther away from the light.

Whatever qualms one might have... it should be warmly greeted by grown-up moviegoers seeking adult but not overly weighty material.
